PHOTO STORY – Lan Fong Yuen

Wandering among skyscrapers in Central, Hong Kong, you may not imagine that in the back street lanes lay some old, or perhaps shabby, Cha Chaan Tengs (Hong Kong style Café) that reflect a certain culture of Hong Kong itself. Lan Fong Yuen is an old Cha Chaan Teng that has over 50 years’ history. It’s not about outstanding appearance, nor five-star rate service, Lan Fong Yuen just keep that Hong Kong style flowing along with time, and that, is what Hong Kong people treasures.

Lan Fong Yuen found its way though in the old times and likely it will manage to survive in the modern trend. Even though there are more and more chain restaurants opening up in malls, making dinning more and more convenient, the flavor of old HK-style food will keep on haunting the HKers. That’s the reason why there are still many young people think highly of Cha Chaan Tengs. Cha Chaan Tengs spend no money on advertising, but still win a cluster of customers and have its place in the market. That, I guess, is the eternal glamour of Hong Kong Style.

Egg Tart – Hoover Cake Shop

Egg tarts are undeniably one of the best representatives of Hong Kong food. The egg tart (’dan tat’ in Cantonese) is a kind of custard tart pastry popular in Hong Kong, southern China and other Asian countries, which consists of an outer pastry crust that is filled with egg custard and baked.

During 1950s and 1960s, Lu Yu Teahouse (not allow for photo-taking) took the lead with the mini-egg tart.

Many people studied the origin of egg tart. One theory suggests Hong Kong egg tarts are an adaptation of English custard tarts as a result of being former British colony and adopted some British cuisine. Another theory suggests that egg tarts evolved from the very similar Portuguese egg tart pastries, traveling to Hong Kong via the Portuguese colony of Macau.

It is one of the World’s 50 most delicious foods compiled by CNN Go in 2011.

By searching the internet, it is said Hoover Cake Shop in Kowloon City sells the best egg tarts Hong Kong. $5 for each.

Buttered Pineapple Bun – Honolulu Coffee Shop

Pineapple Bun is a kind of sweet pastry popular in Hong Kong, some other areas in southern China, and also in overseas Chinese communities around the world. It is known in Cantonese as bo lo baau. “Bo lo” means pineapple, and “baau” refers to a kind of bun-like item in Chinese cuisine.

And many Hong Kong “cha chaan tengs” and “dai pai dongs” offer a kind of variant called “buttered pineapple bun”, which is a pineapple bun with a piece of butter stuffed in the middle. They are known in Cantonese as bo lo yau, in which “yau” means oil and refers to butter. Typically, the pastry would be brought hot from the oven to the customer, and served halved with a piece of cold butter  between the halves. Then the butter melts in the middle of the bun because of heat and colored the bun with light butter yellow and smell fabulous. This item is sometimes criticised for containing too much fat comparing to other variants of pineapple buns.

Buttered pineapple buns are basically ordered as breakfast or afternoon tea.

You may notice that buttered pineapple buns are commonly seen in many HK movies or TV series, such as the famous cartoon film McDull, Prince de la Bun.

Most of you may have heard about Jenny Bakery. And yes, it is said to be the best cookie in Hong Kong.

The fabulous smell of cream escaped from the delicate iron box that printed with cute bears once I opened it. Simply a taste of a piece will drive me crazy – so crumbly that it splited into tiny flakes once I put it in my mouth.
